The Toxic Legacy of Zombie Formalism, Part 1: How an Unhinged Economy Spawned a New World of ‘Debt Aesthetics’

Zombie Formalism may have been the most important movement of the last decade. What did it mean?

This is a good article by Chris Wiley. It is about zombie formalism, art flipping, speculation, and the large debt young artists take on that in turn makes them more likely to create works that the buyer group wants - “debt aesthetics”.

I don’t think the increase in debt has lead to a certain kind of works, but maybe the author will expand a bit more in part 2… there is a more diverse buyer group than ever before, which should make it easier for artists to reach an audience no matter what kind of medium they work in.
