Banksy artwork self-destructs after selling at auction for £1m

Shortly after selling “Girl With Balloon” for £1.04m at an auction at Sotheby’s, the canvas passes through a shredder installed in the bottom of the frame.

As Banksy says on his instagram “Going, going, gone…”

One potential outcome, according to a spokeswoman, is that the destroyed painting could be preserved as a document of the guerrilla tactic. “You could argue that the work is now more valuable,” Branczik said.

This reminds me of " I Can’t Believe You Morons Actually Buy This Shit" but on another level :stuck_out_tongue:

But did Banksy himself/someone in on it buy it? For me the image don’t look like it was made in 2006, and the frame must have been charged up prior to the auction.
Sothebys’s closely inspect artwork like this out of frame, so they must have known. I think this is a very clever PR stunt by Sotheby’s and Banksy combined. Likely a newly made frame and artwork as well.
If this was bought by a random person, they could face legal trouble regarding the information given about the artwork. I don’t think they want to risk that.

Myth busted? Great article regarding the incident.

Shredding the Girl and Balloon - the Director’s cut.
Some people think it didn’t really shred. It did.
Some people think the auction house were in on it, they weren’t.
